The Garlean Empire is at war with Eorzea. It is unknown why or who exactly the Garleans are, or their reason for attacking Eorzea, but they are said to have come from the East. Their technology far surpasses that of any of the city-states of Eorzea, with rumors of flame throwers and airships at their disposal. They are responsible for the untimely destruction of Ala Mihgo, and have caused a total restructuring of Eorzea's five remaining city-states through the formation of an impromptu alliance.
