Eorzea ― The Making of a Realm #1 (English version) Video

Beta Limsa Lominsa Guide

SteveManly has translated a brand new guide published by Famitsu, an in-depth walkthrough of things you can do and see in the city of Limsa Lominsa when you first start the beta. There's several screenshots included as well!

Update #3: Retainer guide added. Translation complete. Got a little carried away with the translation because I had a Cherry Coke. Yay, import stores!
Update #2: Limsa Lominsa guild information added.
Update #1: A big chuck of information has been added and the translation is getting closer to being finished.

In the beta version of FFXIV, your adventure starts from Limsa Lominsa, the marine capital. Opone Kikuchi takes us through this unique, two-layered city and makes use of its facilities.

The starting point of your adventure
When choosing a city from which to begin your adventure, you’ll be able to check the main professions and faiths for each of the three cities (Limsa Lominsa, Ul’dah, and Gridania). Your first city will probably have a bit of an effect on how your adventure turns out, but at the moment only Limsa Lominsa is selectable.

  • Disembark in Limsa Lominsa

You’ll arrive in Limsa Lominsa when your boat-bound tutorial ends and are greeting with the site of many other new adventurers. Talk to Hob to be lead to the Drowning Wench pub.
  • A stroll through the upper layer

The Drowning Wench pub is the beer hall located in the Mizzenmast, the building at the hub of the city. Here, there are counters set up for the adventurers’ guild and hiring a “retainer.” There is always a great deal of people here. I decided to walk around the guilds on the upper layer.
  • Window shopping in the southern markets

Walking south on the upper level of Limsa Lominsa, I came to the market district. This is split into a number of wards. This will probably eventually be set up to take you to where you want to go based on what you want to buy.
  • Elevator go down the hole

After walking around the upper level, I returned to the southern part of the Mizzenmast to take the elevator down to the lower level. You can take the stairs down, but I suggest trying out the facilities set up for you.
  • Leisurely lingering in the lower layer

The chocobo stables are the first thing you see when you exit the elevator. To the north, there’s another elevator that goes all the way to the top of the Mizzenmast. If you leave the Mizzenmast and head west, you’ll be able to see the hawkers’ alleys, where import goods are sold.

    Chocobo stables: the waiting room

The chocobo stables will probably be a place where adventurers will rent chocobos to ride for travel purposes. This looks like it would be a convenient place to meet with the rest of your party.

”Stand” by me in Hawkers’ Alley

The path that connects the Mizzenmast and the ferry docks at which adventurers make landfall in Limsa Lominsa is called “Hawkers’ Alley.” It is composed of two large buildings and includes many types of merchandise stands, including “Qiqirn’s Co-op” and “Ul’dah Imports.” There’s also an unknown class guild in this direction, so adventurers may have many reasons to come down this way.

    Just a spoonful of cedar
There are stands in Hawkers’ Alley that woodworkers and goldsmiths will find useful. These stands sell the main tools and equipment that these classes need and also carry a selection of ingredients used in these crafters’ recipes.
  • Visiting the lower layer guilds

There are many guilds on the lower layer of the city, each related to one of the different classes. I was drawn to a guild called the arcanists’ guild. If this is a class, what role will it play? I talked to the NPCs there and starting imagining what they might do.
  • Full circle to the ferry docks

I made my way back to the ferry docks in the west, the place where my Limsa Lominsan adventure began. Right now, the entrance is sealed off so you can’t go back onto the docks, but perhaps in the commercial version, this will be where adventurers will go to get back on the sea, and we can anticipate this to be quite a lively place.

    Don’t wake the ferry master

Adventurers are told in the beta version that normal ferry service has been halted for the moment and they cannot ride. Will these ferries take us to other lands when they’re ready for use again?
  • Venturing out into La Noscea

Finishing my stroll around the city, I made my way out of the western gates into Lower La Noscea. You can get there just by following the path, but if you get lost, you can use “return” or “teleport” to take you back.

First adventure in the majestic Lower La Noscea

There’s an aetherite a bit of the ways out in Lower La Noscea where you can refill your HP and MP and activate your guildleves. A lot of adventurers will be using the aetherites as their base of operations. Disciplines of war and magic can even leave the city right away to spread their winds across this great field, and there are also many places for disciplines of land to gather items.

Guilds of Limsa Lominsa

  • The Bismarck (Culinarians’ guild)

The Bismarck, northwest of the Drowning Wench, is marked on your map by a cute little bread icon and is home to the culinarians’ guild.
  • The Coral Tower (Musketeers’ guild)

Farther northwest is the musketeers’ guild. The self-proclaimed “Knights of the Barracuda” are in constant conflict with the pirates and the sahagin beast tribe, and they warn everyone to “Stay away from that pirates’ den, the Astalacia!”
  • Naldiq and Vymelli’s (Blacksmiths’ guild and armorers’ guild)

Naldiq and Vymelli’s is in the southern part of the upper layer and houses both the blacksmiths’ and the armorers’ guilds. The blacksmiths make weapons of all sorts, and armorers are masters of making shields and other heavy armors.
  • Fisherman’s Bottom (Fishermen’s guild)

At the south of the lower layer lies the fishermen’s guild, the “Fisherman’s Bottom.” Here you can see people fishing and or scattering bait, and it has quite a unique feel about it compared to other guilds. If you want to be a true fishing master, there’s probably no better place to do it than Limsa Lominsa, the marine capital or Eorzea.
  • The Astalicia (Marauders’ guild)

To the west of the fishermen’s guild is a large, docked ship. On the surface it looks like any foreign merchant ship, but it’s actually a pirate ship run by the “One-eye Hilfil.” Here you can find the marauders’ guild headquarters and a lounge where you can hear tales from many a pirate.
  • Mealvaan’s Gate (Arcanists’ guild)

At this gate, the “arcanists” work like customs agents, inspecting cargo and confiscating contraband. If these arcanists exist as a class, it’ll be really interesting to find out what special abilities they have that affect their lifestyle in such a way that makes this a good job for them.

Retainers and you; or, how to make money without staying logged in all night

A necessity for every busy adventurer, retainers are NPCs that will hold your junk for you and sell it to others if you so command them, among other various duties. After hiring your retainer at the adventurers guild, take care of the paperwork and you’ll have a helper who grows along with your adventurer. Don’t think of them so much as a “servant;” they’re more like “family.”

Momma lied to you: you CAN pick your family!

After choosing a race for your retainer, the receptionist will introduce you to available retainers. This will be your new partner, so choose carefully!

The possibilities are endless!

The selection of retainers is quite extensive, but you can only choose one for now. Retainers’ names are preset, but you can give them a nickname.

Welcome to your new home, Ms. Retainer. Merchant stands

After renting a special store, called a stand, you can have your retainer stand there. You can change the color of the roof of your stand to help it stand out.

The market: putting retainers to work

Markets are sections of the city specially set up for peddling wares. This is used for players to mingle. It’s possible for players themselves to sell goods here, but it’s also possible for retainers to work here for you, instead. There are many market wards, so even if many players set their retainers up in the markets, they shouldn’t get too crowded.

FIRST!

Hmmm, some of the textures look kind of funky from these screen shots. Like the stone walls. o.0

We're having some difficulty with the numbered list I used when typing up the article, so right now it's not as organized as it could be. I'll make it pretty again after dinner (but not as pretty as I had it before...)

I love new information, just like everyone else.

But I wonder why they chose to release this to the public and not have it NDA bound...

Thanks a lot for the translation, pretty interesting stuff as always. That new video is really good, loved seeing them at work on the characters, and the motion capture stuff is always really interesting to see. September 22nd can't come soon enough in all honesty.

Oh MAN I hope I get a beta key from those offers that're going out on August 1st. But probably not. :th_015_orz:

Please SE make a character creation program available at least! Then I may live to see the release date.

Also, that motion capture stuff looks neeeeeeeat! And that emphasize on emotes! I'm glad, I always did love the emotes in FFXI. And, with the new facial features and expressiveness that gives... :th_091_-1:

Why Miqo'te Pugilist? Because seeing a cute cat punch up a monster senseless will be priceless.

Good stuff as always. I actually enjoyed watching the video and found it a bit funny when that one guy flung himself back and landed on all the mats. Anyway, yeah that guide actually helped paint the city's layout a little better for me so good job on the translations.

Good eye, Tonka! 10 Manly points for being the first to spot it and call it, another 15 Manly points for the Baby Plucky pic, and a retroactive 15 Manly points for being awesome in just about every post of yours I see on these boards.

A lot of the "flavor" in today's translation is from me, and that was probably my favorite one. When I wrote it, I even thought to myself, "How long will it take someone to get this?"

I think it is safe to say that Square isn't going to give us a box to put our items in anymore. Hopefully these retainers can hold alot of stuff.

On the contrary, I believe this will simply be another form of storage like mog lockers in FFXI and whatever else.
