I haven't played XI, but I will be getting XIV on day one, along with some of my friends who haven't played either.

I am interested in playing XI before XIV comes out though.

I think many people will move to it regardless of how endgame turns out the begin with just to experience something new for them (only the truly hardcore will start bitching), ffxiv will be all new content to them so they won't be complaining as much about something like endgame.

I think as long as theres some endgame content and a bunch of stuff in-between that keeps players interested then it'll be like ffxi where once that first expansion drops there will more content then most people know what to do with.

Them adding new content via the patches will help a lot and making sure to strike a good character progression with the skill leveling so people don't blow threw it in a month of release. It takes two weeks to max a character in wow from 1-80 (thats a damn joke), I want it to stick with ffxi's system where you know the high level players earned there levels, if maxing the first path you pick takes at least 3 months I'd be happy.

I hate playing games that just give levels to people without a true sense of accomplishment behind them, I think most would agree that when you max your first character in ffxi it felt damn good!.

The final fantasy name is more then enough to bring in the player base (square could make a game called final fantasy: when the land was engulfed with poo, and still do well). as for migration of ffxi players? yeah i dont see why one would stay in vana'diel when eozea awaits. i left FFxi about 4 years ago and cant wait for xiv, i think what it has goin for it most of all is the amount of people who have left wow, xi and other outdated MMOs and looking for the next BIG mmo, and those looking at old republic... i just cant see myself being hooked like i will with ffxiv.

in short old xi players current xi players and all round FF fans will be on this like a fat boy on freshly baked cookies :D (im not fat but i do love cookies) xx

My suggestion is, don't... You won't achieve anything interesting before the end of the year on FFXI before FFXIV launch.

Pretty sure most veteran players would suggest the same simply because there is not enough time for you to have a fulfilling experience in FFXI before the end of the year. Since you are starting from scratch.

Of course you are free to do as you see fit, just offering an advice is all.

Just because of the sheer amount of content in ffxi, I think it will stay afloat at least a couple years after the release of ffxiv. There's tons to do and now the lvl caps been raised giving everyone something to work on for a while. (I'm not about to reactivate my account though.) Plus there are people that may not be able to afford a pimped out PC or PS3 right away.

A lot of people will migrate, but I'm sure a few will go back to ffxi for a break or just to accomplish another task with the character they had grown to love. Smaller populations will make it easier to get NMs or farm as well. Even though it's dated, ffxi has a lot to offer.

I personally know quite a bit of people who said they will stick with FFXI when I ask them in game. However, quite a large number of FFXI player said they want to at least give FFXIV a try before deciding. Some people said they will play both simultaneously which kind of scared me. :th_014_:

Truthfully, the chance of FFXI being killed by FFXIV completely? Zero.

The chance of reduced population in FFXI? Likely.

Chance of FFXIV becoming the next king of MMORPG? Close to zero.

Chance of FFXIV make me addicted like FFXI? Too late, already addicted to the new combat system even from just the brief interview and demo of "beta" in E3. It was basically the type of system I was hoping to see in a MMO, now just have to play it and see if it is well designed. I always wanted a stamina gauge in battle, but most MMO that applied that system are either as a class feature or too action oriented for me. This seems to be just right so far for tactical balance, combat pace, and still seems have head room for plenty of customization. :th_087_:
Ok I am going to stop before I cross the line of fanboyism, still gonna play before deciding

I'm sure there are enough die hard fans to keep XI afloat even if a large chunk of what's left of the population moves on to XIV or other games. Heck, EverQuest, EverQuest Online Adventures, and Star Wars Galaxies are still kicking but then again Sony does ok running games on life support. So long as it's making a profit FFXI will be around.
Consequences will never be the same.

They are doing it 5 levels at a time so it won't be an instant level 99 gap. However not sure what they do about endgame contents, they might just scale it to fit new cap of 80 next update, or might not do anything to it, or maybe even impose a level cap on it but that seems unlikely.

The Level of gears basically don't change, but some gears such as relic armors will have some sort of upgrade option so SE said. Of course they also said there is a possibility of another new set in the future, and of course with new levels comes new equipments, new weapon skills, job abilities, and spells.
