Everyone who has the money, and the capabilities ofp laying XIV will jump ship from XI..

Only players who wont.. will either be

A. Players who cant afford it
B. Players who cant play it (No PS3, or Computer cant handle it)
C. Players who will play both.

I mean obviously there will be a select few who might stay with XI.. but XI will die out cause of this game..

I mean c'mon.. XI was already dying out slowely, when this game hits.. i just dont see it getting any better.. its only going to get WAY worse.

I dont see how anyone can deny that.

SE will want to put most of their efforts on FFXIV, especially if its goal is to reach a larger audience. While FFXI will still run until it becomes a financial loss for them, SE isn't looking for it to live -- just sustain it. With that being said I remember a financial report for SE regarding Rapture as being a new flagship product. So, clearly FFXI will be taking the backseat.

I doubt it will get any full on expansions -- but small content upgrades sort of like the Crystalline Prophecies will be what you'll see from here on out.

another thing to think about..

Even most vet players of XI will switch or play both..

Who cares how awesome ur gear is etc when there is pretty much no one playing XI anymore..

Right off the bat no.. but i think it will take a HUGE chunk of players when XIV first releases...

Within a year.. i think XI will be pretty much dead.

I would expect at least a lot of server transfer's within the first year to be available or mandatory so they can shut down some of the older servers in FFXI

Yeah i could see that happeneing... And i think it would be stupid for them not to.

Id combine servers to make XI a little more populated so players who cant play XIV just yet can still have some fun while it lasts, and SE can still make a few more bucks from XI as well..

So yeah i hope they do that.. But even with that it would only be a matter of time.

I think I'm going with both. To be more precise, I am going to stick with both, until the older one fades out. From what I understand, Square-Enix has lined up stuff for FFXI to keep edging it further with the release of FFXIV, so it's technically not dieing... yet. You will have your hardcore players, your old school players, and your players awaiting FFXIV. As far as to what all they have lined up? That's left up for another discussion and another day.

Now, I do see a problem when everyone starts making the jump to FFXIV; That problem being the server loads of the new game, and the emptiness of the older one. Granted, FFXIV is supposed to fix FFXI's faults, but how will it bring the community together like the older one? Everyone complained about what could be fixed in FFXI, but still, they managed to come together, bypass that certain problem, and continue. Will the new one afford that experience?

As I stated in my first sentences, I am going to be playing both until one overtakes the other.

Am I the only one taking into account that if enough people quit from FFXI SE could possible just condense who ever is left and put everyone on a couple servers?

Yeah, others have stated that if certain worlds suffer a huge population loss, SE will definitely combine servers.

Even if they have to move players around to make up for the ones leaving for XIV there'll be plenty of XI subscribers left.

I think that they would definitely move people around and condense the servers. Some people will choose to stick with XI because of all the time they've devoted & others simply won't be able to afford to upgrade their computers. So many factors will go into whether people move on to XIV that I doubt XI is doomed.

since they announced FFXIV this far a head of time I'm lucky to have enough time to save up for a new computer to play it. If I didn't I would have re activated my FFXI account again,

I suppose it will not kill FFXI since FFXIV will attract new player.

Yeah me too. I'm definitely saving up for a new one. My current is only two yrs old but I want something totally new for XIV! I went to reactivate my old XI acct last fall but it had been so long since I had played they erased it and weren't doing the come home campaign. I decided to start fresh and played for a couple months before quitting again, just wasn't the same. I didn't recognize anyone and the server didn't seem to be as alive as it once was.

If I'm understanding it right you can pick any class for any race, and still use any other classes weapon, when you equip that weapon you can use the abilities that the class of that particular weapon would normally use.
Here's what I mean.
I choose Elezen Monk Disciple of War. Now I equip a staff and I become a Monk Disciple of Magic?
Or if I equip a shield and sword type combo does that mean that now I can have tanking abilities?
So from my first impression during battle you can switch pretty swiftly from tank to dd to healer as needed with ease?
These are just my opinions and I'm not trying to mislead anyone in any way. And if I have completely misunderstood what SE has provided, please can someone explain to me?

I think you're completely misunderstanding.

As someone else stated, you can't change weapon (therefore, job) in battle. Also by changing your weapon, you're completely changing from Monk (which would be using H2H weapons... knuckles and the like), to a Tank class when you equip a sword and shield, to a magic class (under the discipline of magic) when you equip a staff.

But you'll only be able to change outside of battle, and you'll be forced to change once in a while when a weapon wears down.

However, you'll want to stick to a class to learn its various skills. Partying will get you more skillups than solo, and in a party you're not going to want to change all the time, because that'll confuse your party members.

As far as killing FFXI...

I was going to say yes... as players dwindle, the "Elite" aren't going to have the numbers needed to take out the higher end mobs.
But it seems that SE will either have to scale back the strength of the mobs (which seems unlikely), or consolidate servers so that numbers get a boost and they can continue fighting end-game monsters.

I think the reason FFXI still lives is that Final Fantasy fans are the most hardcore and devoted fans in the world. Players are keeping FFXI alive simply for the sake of ...keeping it alive. FFXI has been dying a long time now. And when FF XIV goes live, I honestly think FFXI will become a ghost town. I predict FFXI will be shut down about a year after XIV goes live.

I hope before XI goes dark that the game will be free for its last week or two online. I don't play XI any more - I can't bear to. But I hope it goes free so that I can create a new character just so that I can level up around Gustaberg one last time.

*sniff*

Oh yeah. XIV will shut XI down. Totally.

One thing I wouldn't be surprised to see is if XIV players use their XI accounts as something to do when XIV is down for maintenance or downtime for updates.

I highly doubt FFXI will die beacuse of this. Of coarse you have the few people that just ditch what there playing for the newest MMO but there are alot of hardcore FFXI players who are attached to there characters and might not be down with the changes in gameplay. So I dont think FFXI is going to have any problems as long as they keep with the updates and keep things fresh but im pretty sure other MMOs are. FFXIV is boasting a unique combat system level system and quest system breaking away from the monotony that MMO gaming has become which should prove dangerous to the other big mmos out there. :th_052_:

Personally, i think at launch FFXI will see a huge decrease. Over the next month or so it will stabilize a bit more and some will return.

For the most part FFXI will have linkshells dying or put on hiatus for awhile. FFXIV will not be that HUGE in terms of content over FFXI as a whole. I see everyone 'completing" FFXIV and either duel boxing FFXI after or returning till FFXIV releases more content.

Over time, i do believe it is inevitable that FFXIV will reign over FFXI when it's all been said and done. Voice acted CS are going to draw-in even more people to follow the story.
