Over time? Yeah.
So many people I know are unsatisfied with XI. There's very few things to do in it w/out a group. Most people I know only log on for LSevents now and that's pretty much it. Seeing as XIV has so much more options(a little solo/casual/hardcore play) this will make many cross over for greater challenges, and more to do. I've asked alot of my friends this same question.. many said yes, the ones w/ relics told me no, but they'll atleast try it out.

FF11 is showing its ages more than ever and I imagine many will be glad to jump into something new, the only thing holding some back might be that its a new start and completely new world.

If enough people make the switch SE may make the choice to cancel XI, no point in keeping it if there don't make the moneys worth, but yeah they have said they will continue making content for it so that might be enough to keep XI players satisfied to stay.

Most LS leaders know that those who move first and race to end game will enjoy the fruitfulness of end game in 14.

Oh, I agree that FFXI will never die, but it is possible that it could be a lot more quieter than ever.

FFXI.V. is going to have a strong pull on the hardcore crowd. What do the hardcore crowd represent to FFXI? a lot. Most Hardcore players are your leaders, officers, organizers, etc. They're the people that the less hardcore/casual follow into battle. If most of the hardcore hop ship because FFXI will have zero new content, then you'll see things that they participated in slowly grind to a halt unless people step up to fill in those shoes (which as we've all seen many times, rarely happens.)
I don't think it will kill FFXI in it's entirety, but I do think it will cause it to be downsized immensely.

However...
I voted No.
Here is my reasoning.
I don't like the leveling system they are using...
I am one of those players who loved playing with friends and using proper team work.
My take on the videos so far available are that to level up you basically just level skills for each weapon, magic etc. Maybe I'm just really confused about this but...
It seems that the job skills, talents, etc are limitless to one person, this bothers me.
"By merely equipping any of a variety of weapons or tools, players can instanty change their active skills, thus enabling them to dramatically alter their style of okay as well as their character's outward appearance."
^ Straight from Gameplay > Aurmory System
If I'm understanding it right you can pick any class for any race, and still use any other classes weapon, when you equip that weapon you can use the abilities that the class of that particular weapon would normally use.
Here's what I mean.
I choose Elezen Monk Disciple of War. Now I equip a staff and I become a Monk Disciple of Magic?
Or if I equip a shield and sword type combo does that mean that now I can have tanking abilities?
So from my first impression during battle you can switch pretty swiftly from tank to dd to healer as needed with ease?
These are just my opinions and I'm not trying to mislead anyone in any way. And if I have completely misunderstood what SE has provided, please can someone explain to me?

It was stated that you cannot change equipment during battle or while engaged.
now maybe someone can confirm this, but I think it was also stated that there was a limit on weapons skills and experience.

When ffxi was launched it was clear that they had little mmorpg experience. They made gigantic mistakes in regards to the economy, customization and the experience points system. Over the years they have made the clear effort to circumvent "the grind" by implementing new and very successful systems for gaining experience points without party mechanics. Additionally, they have changed the item acquisition mechanics to rely less on random drop rates and to be less exposed to abusive players.
In ffxi we can already see the direction SE has been taking since their early mistakes. The competitive and power hungry nature of many mmorpg players has ran its course with SE. The style of play that dominates is a more user friendly, cooperative and casual style. If FFXIV continues to stress this shift in gameplay or goes even farther than current ffxi mechanics -- then yes ffxi will be all but obsolete. The only people who will still prefer ffxi to ffxiv will be those who so dearly love themselves that they prefer the sounds of their own echoes and will start answering them back by saying "You know you're right (echo self) I am the most uber player here..."

Lol, nicely put. I agree it's definitely the more hardcore elitist type that will be staying in FFXI. The moment SE said it would be more casual/solo friendly, a lot of them put on a sleepmask and earplugs before researching the game further. Personally, I'm hoping they go on believing it's Chocobo Dungeon Online so we can keep a lid on the elitism levels in the FFXIV community. I suppose we'll see if there are a great enough number of them in FFXI's community for SE to profitably maintain it's servers heh.
