I was just thinking about this, do you think this game will be big? Or will it fail? Obviously, it's to early to tell how it will fair, but what kind of feelings do you guys have?

Will the FFXI people come to FFXIV? Or what? I was wondering, although I do not know myself.

Discuss!

Well from what I have heard alot of people who never played FFXI OR played FFXI and didn't like the game are still going to try out FFXIV because it looks and sounds awsome. So I think there are going to be alot of people joining and leaving other MMOs to play this game!! :th_105_:

I think each game will have its own userbase. Obviously some people will migrate but a bunch of might not like the game and will return to FFXI. I also think that a lot of players who have multiple jobs at 75 and have conquered endgame will leave for new challenges.

Going to have to go with no. I'm a firm believer in that no MMO is capable of killing another, only the company. What I mean by that is the company basically says "this is costing us to much, shut the servers down." Sure you're going to get the people who do move from FFXI to FFXIV permanently, but ultimately enough people will stay with FFXI. They may have to merge a few servers, but shut the game down shortly after FFXIV's release, nah.

FFXIV for me is more of a choice, more than a kill pill for FFXI.

The only one killing FFXI is SE, not FXIV.

What I mean is, if SE, don't plain more updates for XI, that's what gonna kill it. Because of the lack of new things for players, they will flee and look for something else. Nobody wants to play a game without suport.

I'm not sure, I kinda think people will stick with FFXI for a while just because they're already strong, know everything, and people don't really want to give that up... Well, thats for different kinds of games that I know. People don't like losing what they've gained over the years... but I'm not sure about MMO's.. *shrugs*

I don't think FFXI is going to "die" exactly once SE's new MMORPG hits the shelves, but its player base will definitely be affected.

Can you imagine Vana'diel when FFXIV comes out? There will definitely be loads of people missing.

However, FFXI will still be up and running I'm sure. Older, less successful MMORPGs with no support still have active subscribers so I'm sure that won't change with FFXI.

It probably will over the long run if XIV ends up being incredibly successful. That is such a long time away though, the servers in XI havn't even started to merge yet. Even then, there will probably still be a decent amount of people playing XI, enough for SE to make a profit on perhaps. Who knows.

I do not believe you can kill an MMO, unless the subscriber numbers dwindle to nothing. As others have said - it would have to be SE who pulls the plug. FFXI is successful enough that it could run alongside FFXIV with no problem. Do you realize how many fans it would anger if FFXI stopped existing, merely because a new game came out? No, it will not die. They'll just consolidate and keep on playing.

As for updates for FFXI, who knows?

You might want to be careful about dealing in extremes. Once people get into that habit, the forums can erupt into pointless flame wars a lot more easily. Words like "killer" and "fail" are unnecessary and unrealistic. Furthermore, a game doesn't have to be big in order to not "fail".

Anyway, obviously some will migrate between the games, and it'll take it's toll on the FFXI community, but I don't expect the servers to shut down completely. Some servers might be merged to maintain more of a populated community feeling among the remaining players. I expect a good chunk of the hardcore players especially to stay in FFXI. They probably won't want to give up their relic or other hard fought accomplishments. Others won't ever seriously research FFXIV and assume that it is WoW with moogles based on what some random ls member told them.

Regardless, FFXIV is virtually guaranteed to be successful based solely on its IP, production value, and premise.

By the time this game is released much of the XI player base will be ready and waiting for the move. With no new massive expansions on the horizon and negative reaction toward the mini-expansions, players will be ready for new content that I believe XI wont be able to provide.

Do I believe this will kill XI, not immediately, but slowly it will slowly over the course of the first year drain much of the XI players and we will see server begin to be shutdown. Of course this will all be dependent on how good XIV actually is.

I personally think XI has about 2 good years left until they being to shut some servers down and migrate people to keep the open servers populated.

Just my 2 cents.

FYI - I have been playing FFXI since October 23rd 2003!

FF 11 and FF XIV are 2 completely different games so I believe it will retain a strong player base even after XIV is released. However when enough players switch to XIV then I believe SE may shut the servers down in order to maintain XIV's servers

Can you imagine if a lot of people do end up leaving the game though? This will pave the way for many people to actually get a chance at many NMs and HNMs that they could never or never did get a chance at before. A lot of people could end up with Endgame armor and weapons..as well as an economy boost perhaps.

Very true but It will also give many other people a new reason to play the game. It will be new experiences for many people and therefore new fun without having to jump into a completely different game.

i think it will bring some players from FFXI but pretty sure FFXI will still keep some of its players. from what i hear about the 3-D visa security thing SE is implementing, alot of ppl are gonna lose they're accounts which sucks and will likely migrate to Aion or FFXIV from what i think....

Exactly! Thats the day that actual beginner players walk in there to just level up and somehow end up with an item that used to be coveted by people much more experienced than them.
