I wouldn't be shocked to learn that ATI/Nvidia are waiting till after FFXIV launch before putting out their newest monsters... Would be an excellent marketing strategy if they knew how many people we're planning to upgrade...

On that note does anyone have any word on 6xxx series? or the next Nvidia line? Anyone going to try to wait out for the 6xxx for either the 6, or the reduced price 5xxx?

I'd hate to blow 400$ on a 5870, for it to be 200$ a few months after and a more budget friendly alternative available....

I heard fusion CPU's were Q1 2011, so no idea when they're gonna release HD 6XXX series. Anytime next year I would say, with prevalence on the second half.

Also I hope those fusion CPU's are not the only new CPU's they are going to release.

NVIDIA just released their line so I don't expect to see anything new from them for a least a year.

AMD/ATI released theirs last September. From going from 4000 series to 5000 series took 15 months and they double the graphic performance. If they can pull it off again it will be around 4-5 months. Rough estimate.

Just a few articles ive found regarding what it looks like the 6xxx series. Southern Island will be a mix of a refresh of the 5xxx series with a bit of the new stuff from Northern Island which should be something completely new. I think we'll see entry level offering coming holiday season followed by the big enthusiast level card in early 2011.

Would a i7 930, and a 5870 be good enough for a while? Maybe once the 6xxx come out cross fire 5870's?

Second article is really harsh on NVIDIA. At least it's from semi accurate. :th_062_:

Those two will last you till FFXIV is dead. Game engines don't change much in MMO's. Just look at FFXI and WoW.

I appreciate your time, you've posted a lot about this, but while you're spamming refresh....

Would the i5 and the 5850 do alright? maybe crossfireing the 5850 at some point if the expansions get intense? I plan on going for the i7 and 5870, but my GF doesn't have the same budget...

Only one i5 will work because the rest are dual core. i5-750. This is quad core without hyperthreading. FFXIV doesn't use hyperthreading so that CPU is performing like the i7 with the same GHz. i5-750 is more then enough for one 5870.
