Fairly recently 4players.de published an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka. Ralsu have taken a look at it and with the help of his magic tools (and a fair bit of German language knowledge) he has come up with points of interest from said interview. There's a lot of information which is rehashed, but there's still some tidbits of tasy information. Read on!

Attached Image: 2125363-vollbild.jpg

Question 5 notes that FFXI used large story arc made up of multiple small quests to propel gamers through the game. Description of short gameplay Guildleves made the editors fear the quests would break down into mindless hunts that do not form a coherent story. The question was if this is a concession to casual gamers.

  • The answer is that even the smallest of Guildleves are part of a big competition between guilds to get the most jobs done. While this is not the major story line for FFXIV, it allows players to feel their work on Guildleves is moving along at least some story.

Question 8 asks about any technical problems that may have arisen during development.

  • The answer says the team did not really have to compromise their vision because the current era of hardware allows so much. Tanaka-san notes the team would like to upgrade to Dx11 at some point.

Question 9 asks about PvP at launch.

  • The answer says we'll get only PvE in the beginning but that the development team is already working on PvP for a future update.

Question 10 asks if we will see linkshell wars or a city for large-scale PvP.

  • The answer says PvE is the immediate concern and that SE wants to deliver PvP without allowing harassment from PKers.

Question 11 aims to find out the exact reason why Microsoft would budge on the closed system of XBOX Live for FFXI but not on FFXIV.

  • Tanaka-san laughs and says he'd love to know the exact reason. His understanding is that MS made a one-time exception for FFXI because XBL was still young and needed any boost it could get. Now MS is unwilling to open up its system to work with FFXIV. All development for a 360 is cancelled for now.

Nice, they actually get it, unlike other companies that build their games around PK :D
How can I give +1 to Tanaka? :D

As long as PvP remains optional without having to worry about being harassed, than bring on the update.

Sounds like Microsoft won't give in. FFXI happened to get lucky at the time it seems, and unless something like that comes up again, 360 might never see it. I personally don't understand why they are so anal about it... I don't really care myself since I don't even own a 360, but I feel sorry for the people that want to play XIV but don't have a PS3 or a good enough computer.

Yeah, I won't mind but there's still the concern that PvP, even if it's just duels, and no PKing, any PvP content will affect the balance of the PvE content. People whine if their class isn't strong enough to compete, that's when things get changed. It ruins PvE content to have major PvP content. I hope, the content will stay along the lines of competition in the arena against monsters, first team to finish wins, etc. Adding duels in may work, but any content where two people fight each other, there will be complaints about some classes skilss being too strong, others being too weak. Let's hope PvP is an afterthought, and doesn't change the game too much if/when it hits.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a PvP player. I am rather good at it to be honest, but I hate what it has done to other MMO's, especially WoW.

Trying to balance classes for both PvP and PvE NEVER works. One or the other always gets the short stick and is either broken in one, or overpowered in the other. I have yet to see a balance in any game.

I'd prefer it not to make an appearance at all, but with Square alredy talking about it being put into the game, I can just hope they find the necessary balance.

Being a 99% PvE player, getting "nerfed" in PvE because my class is unbalanced in PvP is BS.

Unless you find someone else to do it faster, I'll write up a full translation for you after work. There aren't that many truly new things in there, in fact, I thought at first it was just a german translation of an older interview. I guess Tanaka just memorized the lines by now :th_020_bingo:

well i expected them to put it in, weather peeps like the ideal of pvp or not SE has released that its more a risk to ignore it then to add it even in the smallest of forms, but its nice to see they will be giving u the choice to pvp or not.
While i am ok for either pve/pvp as peeps stated it does change the balance of pve classes/jobs alot but theres always whiners lol :th_051_:

I would love nice large scale organized PvP fights. I'm pleased that, no matter what, there won't be open world PvP.

The drift I get from SE is this - PvP is an afterthought for the most part. Certainly if they are implementing a form of PvP down the road, it will be well done (hopefully) but PvP issues will never effect PvE. SE will never let that happen.

That is the tone I get from them overall regarding the subject.

I do agree with you, I have and will continue to trust SE to do what it does best. If PvP ends up in the game, I won't be disappointed if it was colliseum based time attacks. It's just the thought of PvP duelling that I don't like. That's what ruins every mmo. I just don't see the point of being able to battle one on one against someone, trying to kill each other, it is anti-social. Good healthy competition can be fun, and rewarding without the need to rebalance any classes because of whining, so it would be best, in my opinion to only go that route. Let's see what happens down the road.

Guess MS doesn't want to make more money then! I was already planning to get this on PC and eventually get a PS3. Oh well, perhaps it's best that the 360 won't have 14; hell look how horrible 11 plays on the 360 if you play it during Besieged and the system locks-up.

What I can never understand is why they can't implement skills to have different effects when they hit players and when they hit monsters. So you have skills having slightly different effects in pvp and pve to balance it out. It just can't be that hard. If target == player then pvp_effect else pve_effect. And you don't need to worry about pve skills being too op in pvp and vice versa. Just adjust the damage or duration or whatever.

I'd like to see some form of PVP implemented. I don't think the lore they are setting up supports open PVP like some other games.

I think if they can add some fun games, kinda like capture the flag or something along those lines. Set it up and promote it like we do the world cup. Like a competition among nations. Have the victories count towards nation controls or something (kinda like the old CP system) :th_042_:

I think if they try and balance PVP then it will unbalance PVE and they have stated multiple times that PVE is what this game is about. Look at FFXI. Did they really take ballista into consideration when it came to class balance? Not really.

I totally agree. Once 14 sells a ton of units MS might change their minds. But they are like Apple in the sense that they are total ****-Heads when it comes to things like this. Sucks for ppl with just a 360 who can't afford a Ps3 or PC. Fortunately i have a 360, Ps3 and PC. :th_021_:

Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhh! PLEASE make this freaking awesome. You know, eventually. Through updates.

I have some great memories of Ballista matches (like the time Rage beat KTD)(if memory serves me correctly KITCHEN STADIUM LOL) but the format felt extremely ...um, like it could've been much better. Like the randomly appearing goals messed it up I thought. If somehow Square Enix could make PvP in 14 the same level of pure fun (where it is endlessly entertaining and you replay it over and over just for the PvP) of say Super Mario Kart and combine that with a devastating, highly atmospheric endgame story / areas you should have a masterpiece.

The idea of a Ballista city or abandoned PvP town sounds pretty freaking awesome. Filter teams via level cap or skill ability so competition is fairly um, fair. Or have the option for NO LEVEL CAP and just have a free for all PvP in ballista town!!
We know now and so do foreign investors - click this

City of Spokane ... FINALLY ... lol (:

glad to know that the depth of these kinds of question is still cared about!
