Maybe Archers are good at throwing things, and they just pick up rocks off the ground to throw if they run out of arrows, lol.

Horticulturalist are the only ones that can see digging spots meant for them. They can dig up stuff during battle that can be used to back up the party. The more of these people you have, the more items you can get it sounds like.

I'm almost positive it will be this. They mentioned in a previous interview that Archer's are expert throwers, and will be able to throw stones if they run out of ammunition.
