Overall it was a good podcast. On the Role-Playing topic, I facepalmed quite a bit. I'm sorry but after being in the FFXI RP community for 5+ years I wish I could have been there to answer some concerns and comment on some issues. The other article seemed to get a better analysis, even went into responses. The guys didn't seem to be RP-oriented, or at least not well aware of the RP community in FFXI. I was listening and thinking "did you try RP'ing in an RP LS?" That way you can play your character however you like since people are aware you are playing a role. On the "afk" thing in RP... you can come up with an In-Character excuse like some of the ones mentioned here, or just say (brb). It's okay to break character and talk OOC- out of character, if you have to pee lol. That pretty much takes care of a pause thing. There were more things, for example I wish they would have looked at the responses to that RP article and noticed that there is a movement to form a coalition which is about to be revealed.

I don't want to make an impression that I didn't like the podcast or the discussion on RP. I was actually surprised that you guys discussed it in the first place, so big props for that. I just wish there was a little more research done. I really liked the other stories, laughed out loud a few times in public listening to this!

Mason, I played D&D all through college and RPed in DDO whenever possible. I also RPed with one lady in VG. It was neat because I played an evil character (a Kurasasha) and could really take the role with her. The problem was that there was not an official RP server for Vanguard or an RP flag of any kind. So RP was hard. The community just wasn't there in that game.

The distractions I talked about in both the thread and the podcast are exactly what I experienced in DDO. There was the knucklehead he would not use push to talk. Or people would use ((I think it's going to rain here)) too much. Or they'd constantly "/ooc my wife is cooking buffalo wings, yum!" It was distracting.

Something I wrote in response to the thread but did not mention in the podcast is that I honestly believe there is something about being together around a table that makes people take RP more seriously. I appreciate that there are "professional" RPers like you out there, but I stick by my guns when I say RP is harder to maintain in the real-time atmosphere of any MMO, where the players are spread around the globe, than it would be sitting together in the same room or even doing D&D over Skype.

Even after that wall of text, I have to say that I don't have much interest in RPing in an MMO anymore (though I would still do D&D in my living room if my college buddies lived nearby), so I can imagine I didn't seem overly informed about it to someone like you who is more passionate. I absolutely want the RPers to find their place in FFXIV, and I had read the link in your sig and other RP threads prior to you posting here. I always read the threads on those topics because I might get lured in by one!

Thanks for listening and taking us to task on an issue that matters a lot to you.

Thanks for the reply Ralsu. I think we'll have to disagree RP in MMOs, but we can still be friends =P

Yeah OOC is annoying to me as well, some shells had a lot of it and it was okay, others like my former LS had almost none. Hopefully the coalition will have some LS (or whatever they call them in FFXIV) represented which will be to your liking. Then you can play that bad ass character without feeling like you're hurting people's feelings XD

Frankly I think that role playing is up to the linkshell and its player's. When you try to privatize any server to any one purpose, the result is dysfunction, and or chaos. There might be bonuses on rp servers for rping linkshells but never should we designate any one purpose to a server.

I'd like to share a few ideas on the podcast in general, then maybe address the RP idea from my own standpoint.

First, I'll say that I really liked the length of this podcast, and have listened to it twice now. I really enjoyed it. Plus, the dialogue between two people is so much more satisfying than simply Brian talking to us, as it feels a bit emptier (no offense to Brian, he does an outstanding job, but sometimes I feel like it's nice to have different perspectives and that kind of brings about more conversation). Finally, I love that there are so many different topics addressed and discussed here, and that you guys make an effort to at least nod toward different threads and ideas that have popped up on the boards. I think that including a discussion on recent editorials is a great idea, and I'd love to see this happen again in future podcasts.

Onto the RP, I find myself not really getting a whole lot out of RP, although I think we all do it subconsciously even when not actually "RPing." Some of us just can't stand to see the brutish galka who has mastered the art of being a samurai and a berserk warrior become a diligent white mage, assisting comrades. I think even this idea involves RP to an extent, because in general, there's no harm done by playing as a white mage, it's simply the player's expectations for what their character would do. Also, maybe in FFXI a solution to the roleplay/OOC idea is for a specific LS to have 2 pearls, one for when you are in the mood to RP, and the other for when you just want to discuss the game and have fun talking about real life events. Of course this can't always be adapted to every game, and it might cut down the number of people in any single shell at any one time, but I'd assume as a RP linkshell, most people would use the RP Pearl more often. Just a thought on a way to remedy that problem, as I must agree, it would be awkward to deal with.

No offense taken, I am very happy to have Ralsu on the podcast with me and it makes it so much fun to talk about different ideas. Thanks for listening and good thoughts all around. :)

I love this quote because it kinda names the reasons why I dont like rp servers in most mmos.
Although I am a huge role play fan in real life.
