I dismissed Final Fantasy 14 when it first came out, but recently I saw some alpha footage of the new update and it looked pretty fun. I have some questions about the game though.
When Final Fantasy 14 was first being advertised, they focused on the job switching mechanic. I never found any concrete information about this aspect, and it was the reason I decided to pass on it when it first came out. Are you able to switch jobs during combat? For example, if you're in a party and it's about to wipe can you switch to a higher leveled job to get out of that pinch? Or is it like Final Fantasy 11 (I played that for a while), and you can only switch jobs in a safe zone?
Are there racial benefits in Final Fantasy 14 (like Final Fantasy 11), or does everyone have the same stats no matter the race at the beginning?
When the offical website of Final Fantasy 14 came out, there were only around six classes not including the crafters/gatherers. I see they added some new ones, and in the alpha footage they showed their abilities as well. Are there going to be new classes added in the revamp? This was one of the reasons I also decided to pass on it. Coming from Final Fantasy 11 with Blue Mages, Dancers, and Summoners I wasn't exactly interested in the current classes. Are the crafters/gatherers actually able to fight?
I have a feeling that these questions have been answered a million times, but I haven't seen the answers to my questions. Thanks in advance.

You can't switch roles mid-combat. This is to prevent what would eventually be a terrible imbalance in mechanics.
New jobs/classes will be added, although for the time it's just Arcanist > Summer. Keep in mind in regards to the jobs you mentioned in XI that those were the culmination of years worth of updates as well. :)
DoH/DoL (Gatherers / Crafters) will have no real combat options to fill within the realm of a party. Still though, you can switch to those aspects and get done what you need to do while in the field and switch back to your combat role right after.
If ARR is like 1.0 then there will be certain Cooldowns put into place. Meaning in the event of a wipe people won't all be able to switch over to raise and carry on. Switching to something with a raise option or adding it to your current skill set will usually put in place a small cooldown (a few minutes) to prevent players from just all zerging and raising over and over.
Hope this helps. :)

You can only switch job in when you are not in combat.
Not much of a racial benefit.
7 Class = 7 Jobs, FFXIV:ARR will feature 8 War/Mage Class, and gatherer/crafters as usual. The newest class is called Arcanist that is suppose to be the Base Job for Summoner.
Crafters and Gatherers are not able to fight, but they play a significant role
Classes are define as a Jack of All Trade type.
Threr is more.. but i'll leave this first...

Thanks for the information/link guys, looks like I'll be picking this up when the revamp happens. :)
