I will say this, though: I'm hoping Yoshida's awareness of the larger world of MMOs is coming through strongly. Unlike his predecessor, Yoshi-P seems very aware of the fact that there are games out there aside from Final Fantasy XI, and that's not even counting the existing love letters to longtime series fans. That having been said, there are at least a few things I hope he's swiping from the industry for the relaunched version when it finally comes out. As I've said before, it's not enough for the game to just be capable; it has to really stand out, and I think there are a few ideas to draw on in that regard.

I will withold comment so people can read the article itself and debate that instead of my non-sequaitors.

Reading the article made me realize that FFXIV could indeed have some wonderful surprises in changed or added features. But as to the article itself, I agree with a commenter: the author says he wants ARR to stand out then oddly suggests it copy his favorite features from other MMOs. (Specifically, he wants skill trees, level sync and reverse engineering (crafting) in ARR.)

I've seen this often on forums, and in extreme cases it's kind of sad, like watching an addict demand his next "fix". In previous games the player discovered some new feature, actually gave it a chance, then eventually mastered it. Now he wants every game to have that feature to prolong his proud sense of expertise, rather than enjoying the wonder of discovering new things and mastering new challenges.

The quoted bit is a very odd paragraph. It has the feel of something that was edited while writing and then not really proofread for content.

As for MMO's, all MMO's will "steal" a large amount from the industry. FFXIV 1.xx did - it was just a poor mishmash of ideas that weren't implemented properly. ARR will as well, but I'm guessing the choices and implementation will be much better. No MMO is going to be completely original or even close to it.

That doesn't mean it won't be unique or stand out. Smart decisions have to be made on what ideas to use and how to modify them to make them fit into the game's vision and feel.

I agree. I normally enjoy the Mog Log reads...but lately it's almost seemed to be grabbing at anything it can in an attempt to show how XIV "could" be different by being the same.

Let XIV be XIV. It's not like other games didn't take elements from their predecessors.
