Well, in most MMOs. In Final Fantasy XI they get to walk around a little. In UO, npcs walked frequently and sometimes walked outside of their shops, so when you tried to buy from them they warped to the center of the shop. You'd have to try and buy again because warping glitched the menu. And the NPC would proceed to try and walk out again! Afterward, NPCs were restricted to just standing still.
In Dragon Warrior, the NPCs had random walk cycles or would pace around town. If you walked into them, they'd make the same bumping sound as if you walked into a wall. Often times it was necessary to SHOVE them outta your way just to get around in the town.
In MMOs like WOW and such, they just STAND THERE! All day long. And instead of just saying pre-scripted random nonsense and repeating it whenever you pushed the action button while facing them, they also have specific jobs and menus they must present.
