Hmm. Keep popping in and out, lacking the game but following it closely. Interesting that the advanced classes are basically existing ones (odd that Bard is the one they went with as opposed to something like Ranger or some such) fleshed out a bit more (presumably). I really like the cutscene pictures, and do look forward to seeing future classes, just wish they'd tried to keep the unique XIV feel for them. Was a nice change of pace, but guess that isn't going to happen.

My exact thoughts. I'm figuring they're blending the bard and archer jobs from FFXI into one job this time. I prefer the new feel vs. the old, but that's perhaps because I long for another FFXI.

Hmm, it just seems odd, since Bard seems like it has enough to it to work. Maybe they're just using the name and something else will get that theme. And I've played every numerical FF game, and beaten most of them. Same goes for a decent amount of the side games. So it was nice to see them doing something new and out of the ordinary with the Conjurer and Thamuaturge, even if mechanically they shared similarities to past ones.

The jobs and the names is a large part of FF for a lot of people. I wasn't really happy that they used the more 'westernized' names, but I got used to them. However, I'm really happy they're bringing back the familiar job names, without completely abandoning the old classes. Even in the 2.0 documents they mention classes and jobs, so I don't think the classes will ever be abolished completely.

I guess the jobs can be seen as advanced classes, or maybe sort of like talent trees, especially if they add multiple job options per class (which is a possibility)

I'm still confused why the archer class gets the bard job though, bards aren't exactly known for their archery skill in popular lore. Would've been nice if they turned archer into samurai instead, as that was their weapon of choice for the largest part of samurai history. Then again, people would complain about samurai not having the cool swords as their main weapon :)

Well Ranger is an easy pick for an advanced Archer. And I think doing that with Samurai would be odd if they are trying to bring back old classes. But then again Bard isn't the same, so maybe even if the names are similar they aren't just going to do the same thing as XI. That would be neat if so, it wouldn't be the same as the old ones then. As for the jobs to advanced jobs thing, yeah, I know it's meant to be like FFT (the easiest example of it), or at least that's what it seems like. I just hope using just the basic jobs is still viable, and the advanced ones just function differently without being more powerful. Eh, just rambling, just excited about all of this, the pictures look really nice (though hoping we can get Black Mage shadow/eyes).

I don't see how the current system for classes is going to work in the long run; you'd have a class for each weapon type and then each advanced job would be locked to a single weapon type. For example: what kind of advantages would there be to playing as Lancer instead of Dragoon? They have the same weapon type, same essential role, the only real difference is a minimal amount of gear and abilities. Sounds like they just need to merge the current classes with their job counterparts and only add jobs.

On a side note is bard even getting songs? If not, then rename that shiz lol.

What I've heard is that classes are for solo play, jobs are more optimized for groups.. As in, paladin is a much better tank than gladiator, white mage is a much better healer than conjurer etc.

How much of that is true, guess we'll find out next week.

Hmm i see, but then couldn't I just use a better tank or DD for soloing instead? :S

Does seem like an interesting division. Unless the classes get bonus power when in a group or something, hard to tell how such things would work. I just hope they're all... unique, and equally viable in the long run, basic or advanced class. Otherwise the basic classes seem silly or too situational.

That'd depend on the class.. Supposedly Paladin would get more defense but less HP, and presumably less dps. In a solo situation, you wouldn't really benefit much from that except on the tougher monsters.

But, we'll just have to wait and see :)

Yeah :) not too far away now. On a side note, is anyone else somewhat bummed out that jobs level through quests?

Wait, they exclusively level through quests? I thought they'd level through normal stuff, but must have missed that info. That's... really odd in a way. I mean, I don't mind it too much I suppose, but don't get why they have it set up that way. Maybe just to prevent people from leveling them too fast, or ignoring base the regular classes.

They don't level at all really.. They basically just add spells/skills to your base class, and alter the base stats somewhat. The job will always be the same level as the base class, and when playing the job, you get XP for your base class, so even when playing paladin, you're leveling gladiator.

The quests are to unlock new spells/skills and eventually the class specific artifact armor.

Hmm? I figured they were complete like the current stuff (full levels and such), but it sounds more like they're... I can't think of the right word. Must have missed a decent amount, didn't realize so much had been revealed on how they function.

I didn't know leveling a job is basically the same as leveling your base class. Do you still remember where you read that? Thanks.

Might have been in one of those developer live chats, but I'm not sure.
