I was just thinking about this today, I wonder if SE will let us pick which servers at the launch of ffxiv? it would make sense to do so, but I also see a problem with over-crowding and also, separation of regions on certain servers (IE, Westerns all jump on server A, and jp's jump on server B), which I know SE does not want to happen.

but if they do allow us to choose our servers, is there any plans of a ffxiv core LS (guild, group, whatever)? I think it would be neat to be in a the same group that we have all been with speculating ffxiv on this forum.

make Zyuu the leader, with the forum leaders as sackholders, and we pretty much got a neat little social LS going on here without too many recruit problems (plus we will all be starting fresh together, and we will be able to communicate any findings in-game with each other easily.)

Plus, it would also help with reporting interesting things from the game on the ffxivcore website. Whats better than having a large group of people all on the same LS reporting to the same dedicated ffxiv site? we would be unstoppable as a ffxiv news site! :p

would anyone else be willing to join?

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong section, thought maybe it should be in the LS section, but its really about if SE allows server choices. Move if necessary.

If you're on a different server, then you may as well be playing a different game.

I'm concerned that my name will get taken on the server with most of my friends/Core members. I'm hoping that we can keep our names from the Beta as a reward for free testing labor.

well, hopefully with the last name addition, that won't be AS MUCH as a problem as ffxi.

as much as I hate to say it, I hope they have closed servers with random population adjustment, at least for the first few days/week till things settle down.

If they could implement a system that would allow us to choose our server, while maintaining some sense of "crowd control" (i.e. server flooding) then I'd be all for it. Who knows? they might have something along those lines in the works when they introduce the game. Truth be told I liked the World Pass system. It c0ck blocked server flooding, BUT allowed for people to STILL be able to get their friends aboard, it just took time and money.

As for joining a "Core Server", I like the idea. A LOT actually. I've met some pretty endearing and hardCORE people here and would hope to be able to pass them in a city and wave with an acknowledging smile. As far as a CORE LS, it'd have to be a social for me (unless it was a hardcore/professional end game shell, but I won't hold my breath haha.) but it'd be one that I would be proud to be a part of and hop in to chat from time to time.

They can not allow people to freely choose their servers. If they were going to do that then they would just give us segregated servers from the start

I agree with Duck and E. Different servers are both necessary but also drastically impair a sense of community, until you are able to server hop. The conditions for changing servers might vary wildly, but I'm sure SE will provide the service nonetheless.

You never know with SE which way they might go. They may impose diversity at first. But they have been heavily stressing in their interviews that they want for existing linkshells to be able to play together in FFXIV. This leads me to expect that they will allow for you to choose a server that a friend might already be playing on, until that server gets full I suppose.

One aspect I think is important to consider, is the idea that SE should make server hopping and name changing extremely cost prohibitive and time consuming. I really can't stand those neanderthals that jump server to server committing the most heinous acts of betrayal and moving on to the next victims unidentified and untouchable.

I don't really care if we can choose our own servers. A part of me wants to be able to choose my own server, but a part of me dosen't want the option.

Well pros- I can be on the same server with people I know, If I wanted I could go to either a crowded or a uncrowded server, I can play with people from day one

Cons-server crowding, server segregation,

I think the best option for this is for people to be placed randomly on servers for the health of the community in the long run, with the the option to pay a fee to have your character transferred. Or to pay an initial fee to have your character start on the server you want.

Or the gold pass system with modifications to allow you to switch your character to another server instead of allowing you to remake your character on another server.

But then to give people a "choice" by setting a server max setting vs other servers. So like no server can have more then 300 more people then any server.

I would love the option for a Core ls since I like a lot of the people on here but it will have to be social for me since I have a tendency to crave efficiency. That and I like to do the most challenging and time consuming things in the game@.@ But still I would love to chat with everyone hereXD

Sweet, our characters will really be able to have last names now?
And really, all I want to do is play with old friends from FFXI, of course I'll be happy to meet new people, but I look foreward to seeing old friends above all

ppl will just delete/create characters till they get on a server they want with their friends/name they want, might as well let them chose from the start. it would be cruel to break apart a group that has been looking forward to playing the game together just to be broken apart cuz of "population control." maybe eventually allow for server migrations like WoW did, but they need to find a way to help ppl get with the characters they want to play with easily and fast, no one wants to waste paid time to be away from friends and wait to be placed in their server.

Exactly! As for players seperating themselves based on region, I can't really see that being much of an issue, at least for me, some of the best players I know are JP and/or EU, besides, I'd find playing with nothing but people from NA would be boring, diversity is nice.

I re-rolled 24 times trying to get onto my friends' server before finally taking a world pass.  Although many people complained about the world pass system, it did work to solve the kinds of server selection problems that have plagued every MMO launch.

I really REALLY hope they allow us to choose our own servers, or at least implement a system that allows us to migrate to other servers immediately. Not only because it'll give core members the chance to bundle up but as well as continuing the adventures we had with friends from FFXI.

I'm conflicted on this one, while the world pass system was good, I didn't like the fact that the person getting the passes literally needed an entire day to get those passes for a group of friends, sitting in front of your computer with a new MMO and not being able to play on day one blows. On the other hand I don't want the servers to become imbalanced or segregated either. Hopefully, they are able to find a median between the two.

This is a issue that has to be handled with care by SquareEnix. I'm personally for random servers for the first few days or first week. Yes people will probably re-roll to select a different server in order to be with friends, linkshells, and Core members, but there are those who will keep still and play on the server they are given which give various servers a chance at life and becoming populated with players. Because face it on day one of a MMO release people are far more interested in playing the game and experiencing it or rushing to be the first at X subject (Oh, there will be those to come) over which server they will play on and thus will result in a large majority of people just clicking on the first server they see on the list and informing friends, and linkshells that there on X server and then those players will tell their friends and the cycle continues until you have imbalanced servers. Not to mention the English players who wish to party only with English players will herd to one server and vice versa for Japanese players and on top of imbalance you have segregated servers as well.

Now on the note of having random servers for the first days or first week they should implement a way for players to switch servers similar to that of a world pass or offer players one free server switch after the first few days or week (that's how Warhammer tried to handle the server imbalances..then again they did make the mistake of opening a few servers at the start and the rest later..)

But, this is just one man's humble opinion on the matter.

I thought the system FFXI used worked out alright. If you want to join a friend in their server, then they give you a world pass. If you go in solo, the game will determine for you. This helps keep servers balanced with users.

I'd really like to choose a server, to either be with Core members, or be with my 'kind'. I'm Europian and because alot of the people here on Core are Americans, there's not really a way to raid and do stuff together properly due to the difference in time. That said, an Europian Core LS would really be nice!

They should make it random, to avoid language/racial segregation(JP onry servers). But, everyone who buys a copy of the game should get a free set of world passes that can be used in the first week that the game is available. After the first week, world pass purchases onry.
