We all love to group just about anything into categories, including ourselves. It's a human thing, yeah? With FFXIV on the horizon many different types of people will come together looking for an experience.

The question is, what kind of experience are you looking for? What kind of gamer are you? Your friends? Well, take a look bellow for my little chart and see where you fit in. You may be surprised.

The Quick List of Gamers (You may be multiple ones)

Generic Gamer \ True Gamer

A quickly dying breed. Used to be known as nerds, and proud of it, Generic Gamers grew up with the industry and played games such as Chrono Trigger, Super Mario Bros., and Zelda: Link to the Past. Typically will play just about any game/genre and usually prefers retro games.

MMORPG: Middle ground gamer, plays 'em with skill and steadily improves, will stay up for the over nighters, but isn't afraid to give the game a break and play another game for an evening.

Lamer \ Brah Gamer

Makes up about 30% of the gaming population. First owned console is usually an xbox 360 or ps3, is what makes Xbox Live and PSN network so terrible and annoying. Known to say "brah" a lot, wears brand names clothing and backwards caps, usually with a beer in hand, and only plays Halo or Madden games. Everything else is too "kiddy". They like to brag and complain a lot though, strangely enough..

Review link: http://www.vgcats.co...s/?strip_id=287

MMORPG: They don't. Social lives, girls, and going to bars takes up too much of their time.

Casual Gamer

Majority of the gamers these days. Prefer to play for an hour or so at max, once every so often a week. They are willing to pay full price for less of a game not minding that the game has much less content than typically placed within games of the same class. Loves to play party games such as Carnival Games for wii. Being targeted by the industry because of great numbers and willingness to pay full price for less of a game.

MMORPG: Plays a few hours a week. Typically takes a year or so to meet max cap when it takes even other gamers a month or two to do so. Dislikes MMORPG titles using lengthy and stale mechanics such as raids and long leveling periods (not that others aren't complaining loudly about this).

The Blood Rager

Plays for the pure pleasure of destroying. Can't destroy things enough, every death upon another being is deserved, and any amount of blood is not enough. Usually only plays PvP games and enjoys dominating others far more than playing the game itself. As long as people are dying, especially if they are unhappy about it, it doesn't matter if they win or lose.

MMORPG: PvP master, usually does nothing else. Kills the weakest of players as a hobby and enjoys dominating players in any form of competition be it highest DPS or most kills in an arena.

The Merchant

A real baron and trader, plays simply for the joy of collecting items and making profits. Hates losing currency and are typically the richest and best geared of players. Plays the market like a flute and often whores out crafting in any possible.

MMORPG: Stated above, usually richest players and crafting masters. Masters of the auction house or other market center as well.

The Star

Loves to be popular and well known. Typically posts constantly on the forums and tries to achieve accomplishments they will receive fame for.

MMORPG: Join the most hardcore of guilds and try to find ways to improve their popularity. Very vocal and sometimes generous, granting large amounts of assistance, gold, items, and time to get others to like them and spread the word.

Hard Core Gamer

Small portion of the gamer community. Want to be the best at anything they can, crunching numbers and max-min-ing their characters. Are sometimes elitist and look down on "lessor" players. Respects power and dedicates oneself wholly to a cause. Will power through an RPG in half the gameplay time with just about everything in tow and completed.

MMORPG: The best players forming the best guilds playing the most amount of time with the best gear. They like being the best, put a lot of work into doing so, and sometimes look down on others who aren't on the "best" list.

The Adventurer

Loves to experience and nothing more. Loves the thrill of exploring a new world with new characters and eagerly awaits the next dungeon/town/level/region. Will play and buy games to explore them and quickly gets bored if nothing new is presented quickly or if there is a lot of back tracking.

MMORPG: These are the explorers and enjoy nothing more than finding the most remote secrets of every MMO world. Quickly becomes bored of a game if they've seen everything even if they are not maxed level or geared out or if there's pvp. Will explore difficult regions for fun regardless at level and farm for the supplies needed to do so.

The Story-liner (Thanks Omen!)

This gamer just want's the be immersed in an enthralling story-line with interesting characters that are facing tough decisions. This type of gamer likes to find answers.. and fast and absolutely loves 20 minute cutscenes and FMV's.
To this gamer, once the end credits are rolling the game is beaten and the disk is already being taken out... unless there is a secret ending after the credits.
This gamer cares not for trophies, bragging rights or what unlocks are left unlocked. The story is all that is wanted.

MMORPG: Is the type not to even try MMO's unless they seem interesting. Will spend all their time reading every bit of text possible in the game to find the storyline and know what is going on with the characters. Once this gamer has discovered there are no stories in MMO's they either proceed to become social gamers, talking with their guild and making other players feel better about what level they are.. or they will unfortunately cancel their subscription and got back to re-play earlier offline titles.

Which are you? Have any "types" of your own that think should be on the list? Don't agree with some of these? Well post away!

I gotta say i'm the adventurer type, with a little bit of the merchant. I tend to get bored of mmorpgs fairly quick once i reached the max level if there's nothing else new to do. i'm not a fan of repeated grinding/raiding just to get a pieces of equipments so that i can raid/grind even more.

The joy of being an adventurer is that you discover stuff no one ever seen before. If i ever discover a place with rare mobs or secret treasure chest, i will never tell anyone but keep it for myself to sell. that's where my aspect of the merchant shows. i like to sell only rare stuff just to show other people that i managed to get the item in the first place!

I would have to consider myself part hardcore gamer, part adventurer. I love exploring games, but I also like maxing out characters. Although I like being the leader of a group (if I have experience at the game and I know what I'm doing), I actually don't like being the leader of a guild. So, yeah, I'll take my orders from the higher ups...and dominate in their name.

I'm not a rager, and I don't look down on others. But, if you...

A: Disobey orders,

B: Question my authority,

C: Dare try to "debate" about how my eyes do not make effective camo and pester me about that 24/7,

then I will not have any problems sending you on "glorious" missions of conquest (in other words, suicide missions). It's too bad that FF XIV doesn't have any PVP in terms of direct fighting against another player whatsoever, I'm going to miss the times when I made "examples" of disobedient soldiers in previous mmorpg games...

But, if you're my friend, then you have an excellent commander who will do his best to lead his subordinates to victory.

I'm definitely a merchant/star. I am constantly working out business deals in MMOs and playing the auction house, always finding new ways to make money in MMOs. I also love being well-known, when people reference me as the tank to go to if you want something done right, it makes me feel good to know it's a given fact that I'm a great player.

As for my game time, I spend the same amount of time playing a hardcore gamer would, but I don't really min/max my characters, but through being popular I end up in great guilds.

im definitely Merchant & a bit of Adventurer

i tends to try and dominate the market in every MMO i played in, and usually i love to make my items known in the servers, selling the rare stuffs i found from Adventuring before anyone else has it, and i love playing on the Auction Houses all day long

i just love being a millionaire even if i don't need it, and that's where the Adventure come in play, to get the item that will get me my fame, i love adventuring, finding new places/items that no one have yet to achieve

used to be Hardcore with WoW, joining the Elitist and all, but i dont think i will be up for it anymore in FFXIV, as i am already working now, even if i would love to

this was kind of hard for me to pick between hard core and adventurer but because i am not the best in every game i play i think im more of an adventurer simply because i would enjoy my game rather then try to rule at it.

Looks like I turn up as quite the amalgam. First and foremost, I suppose I fall into "hardcore" minus the Elitism. I dedicate a lot of time, love mastering the systems and being the best I can, whether at pvp or PVE, but I only really look down on someone if they're claiming to be great and aren't, or if they've made it to really high levels without understanding the game. Once had a lvl 50+ party in FFXI where only one member besides myself knew what a "Skillchain" was. Bah.

Second, I suppose I'd fall under the Merchant. I loved fiddling with the economies in games I've played. If there's an AH in a game, I'll find a way to toy with the market. Buyouts and resales, market floods to drop price on certain items I'd need long term or simply to increase profitability of a craft, I've done it all. Some days, I'd log in specifically _for_ that, because some weird part of my brain found it fun.

Last of all, I'm also a bit of the Adventurer. I love finding all the little secrets in anything and everything I play. I'll run through areas way over my level just to explore them, and perhaps see if I can find things of value hidden amidst all that danger. In FFXI, I explored all of Beaucedine Glacier the moment I could cast sneak and inviz. Got all my crystals for all areas well before I should have, and loved it. Died a few hundred times, but didn't care.
Proud Guildmaster of the Seraphim, check out our Recruitment thread here.

Guild banner is in progress... As soon as I can convince Cerulean Shaman to draw it up for me. :3

wow... not easy to pick. Sooo... I'll say I'm a True, Adventuring, (modest) Star Gamer. :th_095_:

I've been playing the classics since I was a kid and occasionally go back and play some for fun/nostalgia's sake. I like to look for the, many times, simple things that might be over looked and find myself adventuring and exploring in MMO's and other adventure/sandbox games. And who doesn't like to get attention? I don't always go out of my way or put others down to get it(where the modest comes in). It just feels nice when you're in the lime light and loved and respected.

I don't really fit into any of those categories. I can sort of identify with one or two of them, but not quite.

I'm more of a "Social Gamer".

I play to meet people, talk with them, either via text in game, or by voice with vent or skype. Most of my gaming revolves around playing with friends or people I just meet. Doesn't really matter what I'm doing. And I tend to play games more than just a few hours a day, and pretty much every day.

I'm really a guild-person. I love being in an active and social group of nice, friendly, cool people. I've been in quite a few linkshells in FFXI over the 6 years I played, where I've met best friends with whom I've established long-lasting friendships that continue outside of games.

Exploring games with friends and doing end-game events with close friends is what makes MMORPG's fun to me. After-all, the community is the whole point of an MMORPG. I do like to read and post on forums, but I don't care at all about infamy in the slightest. I just like having really good friends.

When not playing a game with online capabilities, I just play your typical puzzle or RPG games.

But I guess if I had to choose from one of the above categories, I guess the closest one I can identify with is... "Generic Gamer"... lol.

The Story-liner

This gamer just want's the be immersed in an enthralling story-line with interesting characters that are facing tough decisions. This type of gamer likes to find answers.. and fast and absolutely loves 20 minute cutscenes and FMV's.
To this gamer, once the end credits are rolling the game is beaten and the disk is already being taken out... unless there is a secret ending after the credits.
This gamer cares not for trophies, bragging rights or what unlocks are left unlocked. The story is all that is wanted.

MMORPG: Is the type not to even try MMO's unless they seem interesting. Once this gamer has discovered there are no stories in MMO's they either proceed to become social gamers, talking with their guild and making other players feel better about what level they are.. or they will unfortunately cancel their subscription and got back to re-play earlier offline titles.

I think this should be added, nicely done. I do not fit into this category whatsoever though, rofl.

Basically just fit in to Generic, play MMOs like any other kind of game - even at this moment in time I'm deciding between which of 5-6 different games to play haha. Omens post above is another one I'd probably fit into.

Lamer \ Brah Gamer

Generic Gamer \ True Gamer with a side of Hard Core Gamer I enjoy min/max-ing my character(s) in various games and enjoying the feeling of being powerful and having the knowledge of what works and doesn't work.

I am totally a Story-liner :P and somewhat adventurer as well ^_^ I just absolutely love all games that have a well thought out plot, interesting characters and character development. Yes, most of the time, I do immediately move on after Ive finished the game except if there's a secret ending. In fact, if I need to play the game again to achieve it or something, then I'll just head on to youtube and go check out all the extras and secret endings or other endings over there.

Also, being a story-liner, this makes me a RPG Hungry Monster lol. I gladly sink my RPG hungry teeth into any good looking RPG. By good-looking I don't mean just graphics but all the above mentioned things as well.

Oh, and yes, graphics do play an important part in choosing whether I like or want to play a certain game or not though it is not always the case.

Generic/True Gamer and Story-liner altought RP is missing! XD

When I can, I still place my PSOne and Play oldies, or Download NES Emulator and Play Oldies.
I also enjoy to watch Cutscenes and read some of the plot same for reading the quest dialogues if interests me, where some times just the look of the char. is anoying I wont read the storyline.

Then RP, I creat my unique character with a background story in the world where then I voyage and say, collect, dress, demonstrate, sell, buy, subject, discuss, wear arround the world. :)

Cheers
