I wasn't planning on buying XIII. However, I'll buy it day 1 if a beta key for XIV is included.

I truly am unhappy with this. As someone mentioned, Beta is not meant for all (and a good reason Aion had a rough start.) Seems foolish to just advertise one product using another product as a key feature. I can see why they would do something like this considering someone such as myself, who was going to hold off on buying FFXIII till it lowered in price or I could pick it up cheap used (how I buy most of my games that I am not overly gaga about), are now considering buying this game for the sole fact of getting into and trying out the beta.

The one thing that gives me some hope is this:

Giving out beta codes with a major Final Fantasy release would be a disaster.

First off, it would just result in people buying your game FOR the beta. Look at Crackdown for Xbox360 as an example. It came with the Halo 3 multiplayer "beta," and sold tons of copies for it...yet hardly anybody seemed to play the actual game, which is unfortunate, because that game was incredible. While Square-Enix might not complain too much with the sales numbers, it seems like a wasted effort in making Final Fantasy XIII in the first place if people only get it to play the beta for Final Fantasy XIV.

Second, if beta codes are included in every copy of Final Fantasy XIII, that's essentially a public beta release, as it's available to everyone. Square-Enix would be pretty ballsy to do a public beta on their game first, instead of a lower number closed beta. I could see a beta code being released with a game if Final Fantasy XIV had already been in beta test, thus making it the "public beta/stress test," but that isn't the case here.

Third, as stated above by Evicerator, Square-Enix plans on doing the beta test for PC at first, which is odd that a code to get into said beta would be released on a separate console.

Personally, I think it'll be an in-game item, such as a house furnishing similar to Final Fantasy XI...something related to Final Fantasy XIII. Maybe one of those disgusting looking Chocobos to plop in your room...

Don't get me wrong, I WANT the beta test to start immediately, I just want it to go as smoothly as possible.

Lol this is how I feel too, as much as I would love to be in the beta, I prob won't be very contributory toward the game's development. I would rather if the closed beta was performed by someone who meant to break the game and find any exploits.

IT LIKELY IS NOT A BETA KEY BUT A CODE TO RECEIVE AN IN-GAME ITEM.

It is very important that we reread the edited first post in this thread, which I will post here. I'd also recommend a mod change the name of this thread. While it drives traffic, I think it may be a little misleading at this point.

Great to hear that it isn't beta keys (although I would love for them to be). I just hope the beta goes as smooth as possible. Still though, what could the item be, there are endless possibilities considering this is a new game!

Appears that this site is reporting that the item included in FFXIII is an in game item and not a beta key.

I plan on preordering FFXIII when I get around to stopping in a game store to doso, i'd much prefer an ingame item over a beta key.

Although, I don't think including a beta key in a preorder is a horrible idea like many opinions here, I do, however, think including it in release game would be a bad idea. Preorder numbers are high but not that high that I think it would have that negative of an effect.
