I took a video of the video that was being played and uploaded it, but i figured out that it has already been released in HD quality.
I left my cell number to get invited to the Gold Party tomorrow night with a more lengthy presentation of Final Fantasy 13 (FFXIII) and hopefully a chance to ask questions.
View photos from the show, the video that was taken of the French FFXIII trailer and also a write-up of the Final Fantasy XIII presentation:
Final Fantasy XIII Presentation
First time it is shown in occident and gives us a preview of what was demonstrated in the Tokyo Game Show a month ago. The game development started 4 years ago and is expected to end in Spring 2010 for PS3 and 360.
3D Engine
The 3D engine is really impressive.
- Transitions between Pre-calculated Videos and Real Time 3D are really smooth. You can barely see the difference.
- Real Time Animations of all the face (eyes, eyelashes, lips) and clothes (dresses, pendant).
- Real Time Lightning on everything from buildings to characters.
The action starts with Lightning and Hope, they are trying to escape from the l'Cie, a powerful elite squad. At the beginning, the goal is to infiltrate the zone by using secret passages, sneaking from patrols … They are then joined by Snow a rebel chief and Vanille to take over their first flying ship. The group of character you control is going to vary a lot during the game progression.
Fight
Enemy Types
We have seen different types of encounters during the presentation. First of all, the traditional guards who are weak and not a real challenge. Then, you have “elite” guys that are a lot tougher and bringing guards with them. Finally, bosses with multiple phases.
You can avoid by default combats, however you won’t gain XP by doing so.
Invocations
When you call an invocation, it will behave as another member of the group. Once there, you have a short delay to merge your character with the invocation. You have now a point pool and can use special abilities with these points. The last ability is a lot more powerful than the others but will make your invocation fade.
We have seen two invocations: Odin that transforms into a Horse when merged and Shiva into a Bike.
Break bar
In order to fill that bar, you have to constantly hit your target, meaning that most of your characters must be in blaster mode therefore you are more vulnerable and cannot heal. Once the bar is full, all your attacks are multiplied by 2 or 3 depending on the enemy.
Combat Flow
The combats are highly dynamic. There is a bar that is constantly being filled, when reaching a tick, one of your characters is able to play. You can do 3 things during that phase:
- Automatic – When you don’t want to do anything special or you don’t master the game enough, you can let the game decide what is best for you to do.
- Change Attributes – An important part of the combat is to be able to switch state between Blaster, Healer, and Protector.
- Do Actions – Attack, Heal, …
Combat Ending
There is still a combat recap with your XP and items gained at the end with a new addition: a ranking that goes from 0 to 5 stars. In order to get a better score you have to inflict less damage as possible at the beginning of the game or kill a boss as fast as possible. The XP won is proportional to your score.
