And them being capable of meleeing totally goes against SE's so-far-seen structure. Every class has ONE weapon and then an extremely crappy ranged weapon for, presumably, pulling or when your main breaks and you need a last second save. Somehow, rapiers and daggers don't fit into that picture all too well. And we've yet to see how Disciples of Magic works. More likely than not, they have no secondary weapon, and instead they must make do with casting without a weapon/instrument.
The real discussion here is what will Bards use. Will their weapon just be called "Instrument" and cover a wide range (flutes, harps, mandolins)? It'd be pretty boring if it were just one.

The principle of songs is great together with playing instruments.
But in FFXI, lets be serious, there arent many songs in high usage.
The songs, duration, effect and buffs should be designed in a way that allows more diversity.

I noticed this sentence too an got really excited!
There are two possibilities here: They are referring to a bard within their party or the bard that is singing in the bar/inn the party is siting in.
Of course I hope it's the first, I was a BRD in FFXI and I would love to see something like it in XIV, especially if it's more melee oriented.

you mean the timbre?
like in an ensemble where player A plays theme A with instrument A, then player B plays theme A with instrument B?
would be sweeeet.

how they will change the bards i dunno, maybe just make a lot more moves useful then the few?
perhaps spells that can inter lap other classes spells or something that can keep him going back and forth casting on other mobs in the party on party scenarios.
been thinking giving moves to bards that don't wake up sleeping mobs would be cool. like dots, and certain moves that can take damage to mobs and still keeps it's sleep or lullaby on it?
me likes idea of it doing a little more then the few support spells, they will have to if not pulling 200bird chains in between each cast, it would be as dull as ffxi's warrior class lol.

RO did bard right. They allowed them to switch between bow and instrument, for ranged damage. Their damage dealing potential is high, but they're mostly used for their buffs. There are some times that you can do both, with a skill called Musical Strike which does decent damage. One skill, Arrow Vulcan, that was fun. Very high damage potential and can be spammed if done properly.
Bards are totally soloable, but best used in a group to increase attack speed, decrease casting time and cooldown time, and give agility buffs. They also have a skill that increases max HP by a huge amount, and restores a small bit of health over time
The songs themselves are awesome. They don't change with the weapon, but each skill has its own tune. One of them is a metal type tune, the others are all different and have different instruments. Oh, and if you bring a Bard and a Dancer together, all hell breaks loose. You can combine their skills to make even bigger skills with great effects (increase drops, increase exp, shield players inside by a barrier where no skills can be used, and more).
Square Enix could take a page from the developers at Gravity and create Bards who are very useful in a party. They were only required in parties that went deep into the toughest dungeons. They were nice to have in regular parties, but that was just gravy.

But still, it is unreliable information and is not to be fully trusted.
It's not hard to find the list, but I will not be providing it.
