This blog post was actually inspired by my watching a couple of episodes of an anime that Anon recommended called 'Spice and Wolf' so you can blame him for this.
I'm sure that many of you took note of carriages being one of the forms of transport available to players come the launch of Final Fantasy XIV:

I am sure that inspired the same idea of someone driving/steering it, with friends in the carriage or up beside them. Add to this the Disciples of the Hand and Land gathering and crafting perfectly sellable goods and you may start to know where I am going with this.
Travelling player merchants! Buying low, selling high! Bringing exotic goods into the various markets and towns in the world, carriage full to bursting and awaiting its chance to shine. Transporting players from place to place faster than they could walk - either out of the goodness of your heart or for the right price. Vanguard (Think it was Vanguard anyway) actually had a really good system where you could join a 'caravan' which was player run - you signed up to the caravan and could be taken to your destination while offline. If I remember correctly it forced you to log out for three hours or so - but still, to me, a really interesting idea.
Imagine, you've visited a town, sold some goods and bought some local produce, and decide to head to Gridania via X, Y and Z. You have space in your carriage and the travel can be lonely so you put the shout out for passengers - leaving in fifteen minutes! Soon enough you have a couple of passengers, and can share tales - whether about Eorzea or last nights football, before bidding them farewell at the destination they wish to be dropped off at. To me, this kind of journey, passing adventurers busy in the fields, while passing the time with your fellow gamer is an experience that could only be done well in an MMO.
Honestly, I have no idea how likely such is, especially with the use of aetheryte to travel from place to place - but if they are still holding to the purpose of Chocobo as being more than just a mount then it is always a possibility, even more so if use of a Chocobo or carriage gives you more inventory in which to take things with you.
As you can probably tell, I am really looking forward to how these classes and the market works out. Thing is, it isn't even my style of gameplay in most games but I really can't wait to see what they do with it in Final Fantasy XIV. If it is based on players individual sales rather than the use of an Auction House (which are good, no doubt) and the items players create can be of different quality but still useful it will give many people something to excel at outside of combat and allow those who know their class the chance to shine in the same way as combat classes have always been allowed to do. Mind you, I'd probably buy third or fourth best quality weapons, too much of a skinflint to pay for a master craftsmans time *laughs*
The chance to combine the two experiences into a travelling merchant would be incredible - using combat skills to keep the stock safe, and your crafting based mercantile no how to keep your wallet fat.

Quote
"DP: Other than Aetherite, will there be other modes of transportation, like airships and chocobo?
KI: Of course.
DP: Will adventurers be able to use them?
KI: Yes. For how long and how much experience is needed to use them is still a secret. Chocobo, horse-drawn carriages, ships, and airships will all be in the game."

I like the idea, I think it would also be good to have the opportunity to hire other players as mercenaries to protect your goods.

Damnit, why can't we work for SE!? This is a great idea... now you're going to make me sad when it isn't implemented! :P
While I'm not sure of the likelihood that we'll see this in-game, I can say that at the very least, it does spark up more perplexing thoughts on what kinds of models we'll see for players bazaaring and selling. I have to say, I'm also typically one to go out hunting the enemies rather than staying behind crafting or gathering, but I'm going to really try to put my energy into those areas when the game is released. That being said, I'd love to see fish markets set up in Limsa Lominsa, the ability to buy stands and market space throughout towns, to set up advertisements even.
Didn't SE state they were looking for ways for players to bazaar while being logged out? This could be worked into your caravan idea, for sure! In another online game, Phantasy Star Universe, players could set up shops in their rooms, which other players could browse, even while they were offline. Of course players could also lock their rooms in case they didn't want anyone snooping around, but it was a great way to do business while still being able to log out or turn off the computer.
